New: Plant Activity functionality

Meet Growficient’s latest functionality: Plant Activity. With this functionality, growers get insight into the moment a plant actively starts uptaking water in the morning. Growficient is the first in the industry to offer this feature. Below you can read what it entails and how determining plant activity contributes to an optimal growing strategy.

As you know, Growficient’s sensors measure several variables that affect a plant’s well-being. Think of the water content, EC value, and temperature. This data creates insights that help determine the optimal cultivation strategy. For the past few months Growficient has been working behind the scenes on a new functionality: Plant Activity.

Plant Activity: from guessing to knowing

Plant Activity is the moment when a plant starts uptaking water in the morning. Many growers estimate this moment based on their knowledge about the plants or their experience in growing. But: it remains an estimate. To determine the time more accurately, you need more information. This is because the start of water uptake is related to plant evaporation, and thus depends on many factors. Consider light intensity, but also temperature, humidity, and air movement in the greenhouse.

By using data from Growficient’s sensors, the activation of your plant can be determined exactly. Not only per day but even per compartment or irrigation valve. This allows the grower to know for each placement when a plant starts uptaking water.. And you can proactively adjust your irrigation times to what your plant needs at that moment.

More insight into plantactivity

Why is it important to know this exact point? That has everything to do with optimizing your cultivation. Because the more accurately you know when your plant starts evaporating (and thus uptaking water), the better your results will be. For example, if you start irrigation while the plant is not yet evaporating, then you can, more or less, “blow up” the plant. By using data, you keep the plants healthy, and prevent fruit or plant disorders. That gives peace of mind and security and prevents costly mistakes.

Over the past few months, Growficient has tested the algorithm with several growers and their experiences have been positive. One grower indicated that thanks to the functionality he gained insight in the differences between varieties and compartments in the greenhouse. He adjusted his watering accordingly. Another grower discovered that his plants became active later than he initially thought. He now starts watering later and stops earlier, optimizing a more sufficient dry back at night.

More assurance over irrigation strategy with sensors

After the introduction of the dry back functionality, Plant Activity is the second step towards more certainty in your cultivation and irrigation strategy.

For now, the functionality is available to all users of Growficient. Do you want to know more about the theory behind Plant Activity? In this article, we will tell you all about it. Or watch our video, in which our Grower Success Manager Dennis Steentjes explains how the feature works.
